If a web design company designs their clients a beautiful site that they don't want to get messed up by the client logging in and messing with the code, they are less likely to give this all important access to the hosting account. Also, what happens if the web design company that has your web hosting account in their name goes out of business? Well, you potentially could lose the site you paid them for and lose the domain you have marketed in all your marketing materials.
Secondly, when we ask clients who have had hosting with their web designer previously how much they were paying a month for their hosting, often their response is somewhere between $30-$90 a month. Thirty dollars a month is almost a 600% difference than what clients can pay if they purchase their own hosting package. Web designers that set their clients up with the higher hosting costs are generally keeping clients around for monthly residual income.
